Choosing a good web host

Posted by Leave a Comment

The following is an excerpt from my e-book Building Successful Websites. For an in depth look at building, marketing and maintaining a great site, purchase the e-book here.

What is web hosting?

A web hosting service provides clients with space on a server in a data center.

Choosing a good web host

A good web host should have excellent customer service and technical support. It’s extremely frustrating having a problem with your site and not being able to reach or understand a customer service agent. The host should also be reliable with at least 99.5% uptime. If the uptime falls below that figure, stay away. Another key factor: disk space. Choose a plan with unlimited space so that when your website grows, your hosting grows with it. You also want FTP access, an easy to use control panel, and a host with SSL (a secure server). And for the purposes of building your own site, one-click WordPress installation is a definite plus.

Web hosts I recommend

When I first started out, I researched the “best of hosting” ratings and chose the number one host on the list. Unfortunately, while most services they offered were excellent, their customer service was absolutely awful and I ended up switching hosts several times before I found the right one. I eventually purchased my own servers and now host my own site as well as many others.

Should you want a “bigger” host, I recommend A2 Hosting above and beyond any other “big box” web host. They’re the host I went to after trying many of the others from the “best of hosting” lists. You can also purchase your domain from A2 Hosting. To purchase their services, visit http://www.a2hosting.com/3460.html

  • At least 99.5% uptime

  • One-click WordPress installation
